They say that the world could me described as a book, and that each new life experience commences a new chapter. So is it true that we haven’t truly lived without travelling to see and experience what the beauty of our world has to offer? Not necessarily…But it sure helps!!

For over 35 years S-Trip! has been a leader in student travel providing life-changing trips to over 40,000 students annually in over 40 destinations around the world. S-Trip! travellers are encouraged to become global citizens; opening their eyes to new cultures, languages, and experiences. Recently named Profit Magazine’s 25th fastest growing company in Canada, and recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies by Deloitte and CIBC, S-Trip! is a leader in student travel in North America. Find out more at www.s-trip.com.

To add to all that, S-Trip! has now so generously offered the Miss Teen Canada World delegates the opportunity of a lifetime! Not only will someone be crowned Miss Teen Canada World but… Drum roll please… the Social Media Queen will be chosen as well!

So let’s kick things off right and create a little bit of an image for you… hmmm what is my dream vacation? Sitting down at a nice little french restaurant on the market with your friends, snacking on some fresh cheese and baguettes, watching as the people walk by with no care or worry in the world. Oh… do you hear that?? Beautiful live music playing in the background as an artist captures the happiness and freedom expressed on your sun-kissed face. We must be sitting at an outdoor bistro in Paris! Imagine how animated our voices would be, lightly evoking glares from the elegant parisians surrounding us 😉

This city of lights lives and breathes art and culture. At every street corner, the architecture, the smells and the sounds evoke memories of days long ago during the renaissance. Europe in general has a strong hold in the history books and it takes little else than a stroll around Les Champs Élisées or perhaps an evening on the hill on MontMartre for the dream to be a complete reality. Its one thing to learn art history from the classroom and another to have the unimaginable thrill of standing in front of this beautiful painting from long ago. Examining and discussing with friends the intricacies of each brush stroke at an arms length distance. That is passion at its finest.

Paris is a city where artist’s dreams become reality. The present mixes with the past and everywhere you linger leaves an indelible mark on your spirit. There was a time where illness left me bedridden and my artistic skills became the only escape from a difficult reality. As they say, when one part of you is taken away the other senses heighten, in my case, the need to express myself became overwhelming and escaped on canvas and through music. This is the time I produced my largest amount of paintings, drawings and songs. While a difficult time, my artistic growth augmented my need for expression, which would not have developed otherwise. I imagine myself on the grass under the Eiffel Tower with my most favourite people in the world (and Justin Bieber could always join if he wanted too, i have no problem with that) , thinking back on my experiences, appreciating that everything happens for a reason and creating my masterpiece, whether art or song. Even better, my guitar in hand mixing in with the locals, sharing what I have with them, and they with me.

Knowing my group of girlfriends… OMG shopping!

Who wouldn’t enjoy huge malls and high fashioned boutiques?! I can assure you we would do some damage 😉 And then of course an opera or a musical would be in the books for the evening! Imagine how elegant we would make ourselves to blend in with parisian society. The Metro would be an experience of its own, probably best explored “en groupe”.

This trip would in some ways be a return to my roots, exploring the french language in a different setting and enriching my culture and my passions through exploring all that the city has to offer.  Perhaps we could even over look the Seine, on a bridge covered in the padlocks of couples before us. Who knows…I might even fall in love 😉 it is the city of love isn’t it? Fingers crossed!

Theres no doubt that the world is embracing eco-friendly options that are growing at an exponential rate. It is up to us, the emerging generation, to further these options and step up to help conserve energy and preserve the earths beauty before it is too late.

Some of these technological advancements do however grow at a much faster rate in metropolitan cities with a slower trickle down effect in the smaller, more rural communities. In Timmins for example, many of the newer products are either not yet available or have not been utilized to their full potential.

After visiting several potential environmentally friendly green buildings, I was disappointed to learn that not much of their architectural design had been planned around eco-friendly materials or products. I was excited however to discover that one of our local hotels, that is recognized for its nature trails and animal habitat are among the leaders in Timmins who are striving towards a change.

Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa and Cedar Meadows Wildlife Park have built their business around the premiss of balancing your life with nature. Situated on 175 acres, this 49 rooms and suites, 5 chalets and spa are all nestled in the majestic beauty and natural serenity of Northern Ontario. Their design reflects their sensitive treatment of the environment and thoughtful preservation of its natural setting. One of the owners, Richard Lafleur, explained that they are continuously upgrading their business in an effort to be energy efficient. They may not have been able to incorporate the Flat roof system in their designs, but their property thrives on green lawn care with sustainable equipment. For instance, all the recirculated water of the ponds on the property are filtered through  a bog. It is 3 feet deep and uses the sand and mud to naturally clean out and oxygenate the water for the fish that thrive in them.

Also, the newest addition to their portfolio is their spa, Spa Grande Nature. Behind one of the back buildings stands an imposing 30 000 gallon solar hot water tank. This tank is currently heating all pools, the in-floor heating (even melting snow in the winter! Cause Timmins definitely needs that!) and all spa buildings. Their mandate is that they might increase this to eventually heat the whole hotel in this manner. The pools they feature are all salt pools as well. For the spa’s additional heat source for saunas and steam baths, they have installed Bio Mass Gasifying Boilers. These burn wood, but create a smokeless burn which is better for the environment.

Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa has also incorporated 5 new self sustaining Chalets for rent. The owner described the angle of their positioning on the

property as well as the slanted roofs as being significant for maximum solar absorption/retention. The natural environment, as well as strategically placed trees, further aid these properties overall.

Within the spa, there is a very unique commitment linked with their products. Eminence, is a handmade organic skincare company operating in Hungary since 1958. Their environmental commitment is called Forests for the future, where they pledge to plant a tree for every product sold. They have a website, www.enineceorganics.com where the owner can verify exactly how many trees their business has planted so far. Their VitaSkin line features products that are handmade weekly in small batches using ethically grown ingredients.

Throughout the hotel, the owners are choosing eco-friendly alternatives, big and small. Like most hotels, they embrace the model that asks guests to be responsible for their own eco-footprint by recycling their towels. They also have installed soap and shampoo dispensers in order to avoid the sample size bottle waste. All around the hotel, you will see the lighting system, which was already changed to low wattage coil bulbs, but is now being converted to LED.

One of the most recognized features of this property, and even throughout the North, is driving down…. and seeing the different animals of the Cedar Meadows Wildlife Park. Wether it be a herd of buffalo, an albino Moose or a Moose that strangely thinks he’s a buffalo, these and many other species call this peaceful terrain home. The daily tours defy explanation, to gently interact with these creatures in their natural habitat, is an experience not soon forgotten. In this case as well, it is one of the owners who personally oversees the diet and care of each and every animal.

One story I heard was that they once had a baby moose that just wouldn’t eat their feed. Somehow, the owner discovered that he would eat bananas and so thats exactly what he decided to give him. I know this for a fact because he would come daily to buy bananas at my fathers grocery store!

The natural conclusion after visiting this beautiful property, is that yes a green building does perhaps need to meet certain standards to qualify as such, but being green is about so many sensitive elements. Being Green is also about finding serenity, direction, preservation and wellness to balance a sustainable existence. This business is forward thinking and is determined to make a difference and tread lightly with their eco-footprint.

The commercial starts with that deep masculin sexy voice that only wrestling announcers possess.

“Picture this… It’s  the moment you’ve all been waiting and sweating for. It’s the DUH DUH DUUUUUUH…. Miss Teen Canada World Bathing Suit Competition. Your jam “Get Lucky” is playing in the background, you’re strutting what your mama gave you and all eyes are on you. Yes, they know where you’re from…because of your sash of course. But do they really know who you are??”

That’s when a little voice in the crowd asks audibly “Who’s that girl mama?”

The whispers turn into an anxious hush across the crowd and finally into a deafening and uncomfortable silence as the music accompanying her also winds to a halt simultaneously.

Oh no. What is she gonna do you ask? Well, she’s going to lift up the object that she has been artfully flitting behind her as she sashayed across the stage.

You would think this would be a moment of fear and despair… but every Miss Teen World candidate is prepared for moments exactly like these. Without so much as a pause in her step, like a bull fighter at the ready, she whips out her cape…wait no…her PERSONALIZED BATH TOWEL!

Emblazoned in the fluffy white fabric is her name.

“Why, my name is insert girl name here!”

Sexy Man Voice Announcer: “Oh, thats right! You’re “insert girl name here” because its written on your ….

Then everyone in the crowd chants “personalized bath towel“!!

The crowd erupts into applause and the music begins again! Everyone knows and will remember who this girl is 😉

While winter may be the season we are most known for, here in Timmins, we have the twelve days of summer as well… The twelve days of summer are delightfully celebrated by a weekly concert series at Timmins busiest park. Every wednesday night, the sounds of children, cheers and the familiar buzz of northern mosquitoes, greet the talented groups and artists of the region who have been chosen to perform. For the past 3 years, young and old alike gather on blankets and for the lucky ones, lawn chairs, filling the Hollinger Park with support and energy. What began as an effort to highlight the talent, has become a social outting drawing a larger and larger audience each year, regardless of the diverse music styles that areshowcased each week.

Having performed myself many times, I can share the unique perspective from both sides of the event. The Summer Concert Series of Timmins has been an inspiring opportunity for local singers and groups. Seeing neighbours, acquaintances and children dancing and cartwheeling in front of the stage with smiles, justifies why we enjoy living in a smaller community. There is a freedom and openness in this event that reminds you that moments like these are the memories that last a lifetime.
